Road Diet Removed

After receiving many comments from the public regarding the dangerous condition of the road diet on US Highway 12, New Buffalo Township adopted a resolution asking Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to remove the trial road diet due to safety concerns. They also stated in the resolution that they were not in favor of the permanent road diet.

MDOT said from the beginning that they would need a resolution of support from both New Buffalo Township and New Buffalo City, and with the adoption of the resolution to remove the road diet, MDOT did not receive support from either municipalities.

MDOT removed the trial road diet shortly after receiving the resolution and returned US Highway 12 to a 4-lane highway.  They plan to repave the 4-lane highway in 2021.

Please drive carefully and watch for those people that are turning left off of Highway 12.

Stay safe!
